Woman of Worth - women's day special :)

Lady in the Limeleight

Ok, so I know that its not women's day yet ... there are still 3 more days to go. However, I wanted to focus a bit on a few women who are changing their worlds a little by little, day by day,  in their own way...

Today's spotlight is going to shine on Kavita - a good friend, mom, fellow band-mate, lover of life, lover of laughs (her laugh will not fail to make you smile:)), and the list goes on... !

Here are a few pictures of Kavi I took a while ago:

I wanted to blog specifically about Kavi because of a certain campaign that she is involved in which is pretty interesting. The campaign is called Dark is Beautiful.  This campaign challenges the idea that fair is lovely, which is a pretty big undertaking, considering that MOST people in India, especially South India believe the 'fair and lovely' myth.

Kavi inspires me because even when she has her hands full, she finds time to do the things she's passionate about ... and she makes it fun as well! She has a great sense of humour and really values relationships, which is evident.  When she takes a stand on a certain issue, she really makes everyone take notice. She has always inspired me to be the person God made me to be.... ready to help, but also to challenge if the situation calls for it. So this post is dedicated to Kavi and the Dark is beautiful Campaign ;)

A little of my take on this campaign:

I am what you call an Indo-German, my dad is German, and my mom is Indian.  My dad came to India many many years ago and saw my mom (who is dark-skinned) and was immediately interested in her and then married her a few years later. Between the four of us children, we have quite a variety of skin shades, but my parents brought us up to believe that we were ALL beautiful. You may say that foreigners have a different point of view, and yes, they do. However, WHY do they? Why can't Indians also believe that dark is beautiful?

I remember when I was around 10 or 12  years old, and I was visiting a cousin of mine and she loved dressing up. So, one day, as she was applying some make-up to my face, she sighed and looked at my face and said, "you're so fair, you're so pretty..." I remember, even at that age, immediately reacting to her comment and asking her, "I don't have to be fair to be pretty! I think ______ (another dark-skinned cousin of mine) is SO beautiful!" She kinda just stared at me, a little shocked and amazed at this point of view, I think!

Anyways, coming back to the Lady in the Limelight for today - Kavita. I love that she is so passionate about this, and that she wants to make a change in her world. She wants dark-skinned Indian women to feel beautiful about their skin. Yes, there may be many other factors that make a women feel insecure, and not love herself, but the thing is, YOU CANNOT CHANGE YOUR SKIN COLOUR.... well, unless you're Michael Jackson. Oh wait - actually, there are many ads that come on t.v. - at least 10 times a day that tell me I can be fairer AND LOVELIER or more beautiful, IF I apply their product on my skin... seriously? I mean, come on!

If you would like to support Dark is Beautiful, please visit their facebook page and 'like' the page.... then please share the page with other friends of yours....Also - there is a special something happening (its a surprise!) on March 9th, Elliots Beach at 5.30 p.m.. One and all are welcome.... please do come and show your support.

I love that first picture of her! Really beautiful... and you're right - it is amazing how much she gets done when she puts her mind to it. Great job, Kavita! We are super proud of you!

Hi, I'm visiting from The Harried Cook's blog and wanted to tell you what beautiful photos you took there! (That pink & black tea pot seemed to illustrate the point that "Dark Is Beautiful" -- how lovely the contrast looked, dark AND light TOGETHER, rather than being the same color -- a beautiful reminder.) I love that you threw in some polka dots, too! :)

Your photos here are equally stunning, maybe even more so, because they show the beauty of PEOPLE, no matter what the color of their skin. Thanks to you and The Harried Cook for taking a stand and just loving people THE WAY THEY ARE!

Thanks so much Kimby, for visiting and for your kind comments! :) Marsha had the little tea pot set, and I had the polka dotted paper, and it all went really well together... yeah, I think its so great that we can all work together and stand against age-old myths :)
